Advisory Council

An interim Citizen-Based Monitoring Advisory Council has been appointed by the DNR to serve until a permanent board is established through legislation. Interim members include:

Mary Knipper, Wisconsin Association of Lakes
Mary is retired and lives on Delavan Lake with her husband John. They both have a science background and have been interested in lakes protection issues for over 20 years. She is past president and current director of the Delavan Lake Improvement Association; co-founder, past president and current vice president of the Walworth County Lakes Association;a graduate of WI Lake Leaders, Crew V, and Secretary and member of the Executive Committee of the Wisconsin Association of Lakes.

Jeremy Solin, Learning Experiences and Activities in Forestry
Jeremy is the director and former school forest coordinator of the LEAF K-12 Forestry Education Program ( www.uwsp.edu/cnr/leaf) in the Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education in the College of Natural Resources at UW-Stevens Point. He has worked in the environmental education field for approximately 10 years in positions in Minnesota, Oregon, and Wisconsin. He has a bachelor’s degree in water resources and master’s degree in education. Jeremy has participated in a variety of citizen monitoring efforts for a number of different species and purposes including mammalian predators, monarch butterfly larva, breeding birds, owls, garlic mustard, and earthworms.

Kris Stepenuck, Wisconsin Water Action Volunteers' Program
Kris coordinates citizen stream monitoring programming for the state of Wisconsin. This includes coordinating the level 1 Water Action Volunteers as well as a variety of level 3 projects, and working to design and implement the overall citizen-based Water Monitoring Network. Kris also works collaboratively with colleagues at the University of Rhode Island on a national volunteer water quality-monitoring project to help expand communication, collaboration, and cooperation among volunteer water quality monitoring programs across the nation. Kris holds a BS in Water Resources Management from the University of New Hampshire and a MS in Natural Resources from the UW-Stevens Point. In her free time you can find her outside - on the water, on the ultimate frisbee field, on the snow, etc.

Nancy Turyk, UW-Stevens Point Center for Watershed Science and Education
Nancy is a Water Resource Scientist for the Center for Watershed Science and Education at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. She conducts lake and river research to assess water quality and health of waterbodies and watersheds for citizen groups and county and federal agencies. All of the studies involve UWSP students in field work, data assessment, and communication. Nancy also instructs water resource courses and is affiliated with UW-Stevens Point's state-certified Water and Environmental Analysis Lab which has supported volunteer monitors since 1975.

Advisory Council Mission Statement: The advisory council represents the volunteer monitoring community and works in collaboration with the DNR to help set priorities regarding the monitoring of aquatic and terrestrial plants, animals and their habitats, identify funding sources, solicit public support, and assist in the evaluation of the effectiveness of the Citizen-Based Monitoring Program.
