Roy became interested in the natural world through his parents in Kewaunee, Wis. He began photographing wildlife over 50 years ago. A career in elementary education brought him to Door County in the mid 1960's. He managed the Ridges Sanctuary from 1964 to 1990. He was a federally licensed bird bander and held the post of president of the Wisconsin Botanical Club, Inland Bird Banding Association and the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology.
During that time he conducted many Christmas bird counts, annual sandhill crane counts and monitored the wild plants in Door County. Invasive plant control has become a great interest in his work with the Friends of Toft Point.
His love of teaching and sharing the joys of nature led him to begin writing a weekly nature column for the Door County Advocate in 1968 which he continues today. He also writes regularly for the Green Bay Press-Gazette, the Appleton Post-Crescent, the Door County Magazine and the Key to the Door magazine.
He uses digital cameras to capture the beauty of the amazing variety of birds, wildflowers, trees and many other wild subjects. As a student of Nature he feels you never stop learning.
